Steve Bruce has admitted West Brom will be in talks about re-signing Brighton defender Matt Clarke, in conversation with the Express & Star.

The report states that Steve Bruce is expected to hold talks with the highly rated centre-back in due course regarding his immediate future.

Clarke could leave the Premier League outfit this summer, with the defender nearing the final 12 months of his current deal at the Amex Stadium.

Proving to be a regular starter under Valerien Ismael and now Bruce, Clarke has played 29 times in the league for the Baggies this season, with the 25-year-old starting all of those games.

According to the report, West Brom need to move some defenders before switching to Clarke this summer.

Talk to the Express & Star about Clarke’s situationBruce said: “He (Clarke) did very well.

“He probably has been since I walked in the door – he’s our best player, so I’m really, really happy for him.

“All these conversations – it’s all about the future. What’s going to happen in the future is the big thing and we’re going to have those talks.

“We are all playing for our future. Me too. We still have a lot to do.

“We are halfway through this division and I know and you know that will not be acceptable and rightly so for a club of this stature.”

The verdict

What a positive gesture that would be for the Baggies, and, while it’s not an easy deal to close by any means, it’s certainly an intention.

Possessing all the physical attributes needed to thrive at the top of the Championship, Clarke has combined this with excellent technical ability, with the 25-year-old proving to be an excellent passer and ball teacher.

Brighton have plenty of exciting centre-backs and it will come as no surprise to see them part ways with Clarke with one year remaining on his contract.

West Brom will no doubt be preparing for a battle for the defender’s services, with the left-footed centre-back likely to be on several clubs’ radar as things stand.
